About Dr Johnson
Dr Declan Johnson is a UK consultant neuroradiologist with over 35 years in clinical medicine and 25 years as a consultant. Unusually for a radiologist, he holds an honours degree in engineering from Birmingham before graduating in medicine from Birmingham University Medical School in 1990. He undertook his radiology training at Northwick Park and St Marks Hospital Trust before completing subspecialty neuroradiology training at three of the UK's leading neuroscience institutions: The Royal Free Hospital, The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery at Queen Square, and Great Ormond Street Hospital. A year-long research post at Atkinson Morley's Hospital - one of the country's foremost specialist neuroscience centres - preceded his consultant appointment there in 2001.
He is a Consultant Neuroradiologist at St George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (Atkinson Morley Regional Neurosciences Centre) in Tooting, London, where he also serves as Neuroradiology Lead for the Regional Neonatal Neurology and Neuromuscular Multidisciplinary Team. His clinical expertise spans the full range of neurological imaging, with particular recognition in advanced brain MRI, cerebellopontine angle and skull base imaging, spinal disorders, and cerebral and spinal interventional procedures.
He has authored multiple scientific papers and presented his work at national and international meetings.
He provides expert neuroradiology opinion at Royal Surrey County Hospital, Guildford, and sees private patients at Mount Alvernia Hospital, New Victoria Hospital, Nuffield Health Guildford and the Runnymede Hospital.

Obtain Your ReportScans Dr Johnson Reports
Dr Johnson has hands-on clinical experience reporting all of the following scan types. Whatever your imaging, you can be confident it is being reviewed by a specialist who has spent decades working with it.
MRI
Brain and spine MRI is Dr Johnson's primary specialty. Advanced multiparametric MRI of the brain, posterior fossa, skull base, cerebellopontine angle, spinal cord and nerve roots. No radiation.
CT
CT of the head and spine, including CT angiography for cerebrovascular assessment. Fast, detailed imaging used in stroke, trauma, tumour staging and vascular emergency settings.
X-Ray
Spine and general plain-film radiography. Dr Johnson has particular expertise in spinal X-ray assessment in the context of vertebral disease and pre-procedural planning for vertebroplasty.
Interventional Neuroradiology
Cerebral and spinal interventional procedures including vertebroplasty and image-guided spinal procedures for pain relief. Dr Johnson is experienced in both reporting and performing these procedures.
Not sure which type of scan you have? We will identify it for you. Simply get in touch and we will confirm the modality and match your images to the right specialist before any report is produced.
Clinical Expertise
Dr Johnson has spent his career developing deep subspecialty expertise in neurological imaging across both diagnostic and interventional neuroradiology. The following represent his principal clinical interests.
Brain Imaging
Advanced neuroimaging of the brain including the cerebellopontine angle, skull base, posterior fossa and supratentorial structures. Subspecialty expertise built across four of the UK's most respected neuroscience centres: the Royal Free, Queen Square, Great Ormond Street and Atkinson Morley's.
Spinal Imaging & Intervention
Comprehensive spinal imaging from cervical to sacral spine, including disc disease, spinal cord pathology, nerve root assessment and post-operative evaluation. Image-guided spinal interventional procedures for pain relief including vertebroplasty.
Cerebrovascular Radiology
Imaging of stroke, TIA, vascular malformations, aneurysms and cerebrovascular disease using CT angiography, MR angiography and advanced perfusion techniques. Experience in both acute and elective cerebrovascular assessment.
Neuro-oncology Imaging
Assessment of primary brain tumours, metastases and treatment response using advanced multiparametric MRI. Dr Johnson works within a major neurosciences centre, providing regular specialist neuro-oncological imaging for surgical and oncological multidisciplinary teams.
Neonatal & Paediatric Neurology Imaging
As Neuroradiology Lead for the Regional Neonatal Neurology and Neuromuscular MDT at St George's University Hospitals, Dr Johnson has particular expertise in neonatal brain imaging and neuromuscular conditions - a highly subspecialised area of neuroradiology.
Second Opinions on Brain & Spine Imaging
The depth and breadth of his neuroscience training makes Dr Johnson well placed to review complex neurological imaging, providing specialist second opinions for patients seeking greater clarity on their brain or spine scans.
