About Dr Crawshaw
Dr James Crawshaw is a consultant radiologist at the Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford, where he has been based since his appointment in 2007. He holds MB BS, MRCSed, FRCR and an MSc in Nuclear Medicine from King's College London - a post-graduate qualification that underpins his advanced expertise in PET CT and nuclear medicine imaging. He has nearly two decades of consultant experience, making him one of the most senior radiologists in the Doctorum team.
He completed his radiology training in London and undertook a dedicated Oncology Imaging Fellowship at The Royal Marsden Hospital - the world-leading cancer centre and one of the most prestigious fellowships available in UK oncological radiology. This training gives him a depth of oncology imaging expertise that few radiologists possess, and he brings it directly to bear in his NHS and private practice.
He is lead local and regional radiologist for five cancer multidisciplinary teams at Royal Surrey County Hospital: melanoma, lymphoma, upper gastrointestinal, gastrointestinal stromal tumour (GIST) and cancer of unknown primary (CUP). He is also lead radiologist on several cancer trials running at the Trust. This level of MDT involvement is a mark of the confidence that clinical oncology colleagues place in his expertise.
He has taught and presented at national radiology and nuclear medicine conferences, published in multiple peer-reviewed radiology journals, and contributed a book chapter on imaging in malignant bone pain in the Oxford Pain Management Library. He also practises privately at Nuffield Health and The Imaging Clinic.

Clinical Expertise
With Royal Marsden fellowship training and an MSc in Nuclear Medicine, Dr Crawshaw brings specialist depth to oncological imaging that places him among the most credentialed cancer radiologists in the Doctorum team.
Oncological Imaging
Specialist in cancer staging, treatment response assessment and surveillance imaging. Fellowship-trained at The Royal Marsden Hospital - the UK's leading dedicated cancer centre - with deep experience across CT, MRI and PET CT in the oncological setting. Lead radiologist for cancer trials at Royal Surrey County Hospital.
PET CT & Nuclear Medicine
One of the few UK radiologists to hold an MSc in Nuclear Medicine (King's College London), Dr Crawshaw brings formal academic grounding to PET CT and nuclear medicine reporting alongside extensive clinical experience. Specialist in FDG PET CT for oncological staging and response assessment.
Melanoma & Lymphoma Imaging
Regional lead radiologist for both melanoma and lymphoma MDTs at Royal Surrey County Hospital. Expert in CT and PET CT staging, treatment response and surveillance for these two cancers, in which accurate cross-sectional imaging is central to treatment planning and monitoring.
Upper GI & GIST Oncology Imaging
Lead radiologist for the regional upper gastrointestinal and GIST MDTs, providing specialist radiological input for oesophageal, gastric and gastrointestinal stromal tumour staging and treatment response assessment. GIST is a rare tumour in which CT and PET CT response criteria are well defined and essential to management.
Cancer of Unknown Primary (CUP)
Lead radiologist for the regional Cancer of Unknown Primary MDT - a clinically challenging scenario requiring systematic and expert imaging evaluation to identify the site of origin in patients presenting with metastatic disease of unknown source. PET CT plays a key role in CUP investigation and Dr Crawshaw's combined expertise is directly applicable.
Gastrointestinal & General Cross-Sectional Imaging
Broad general radiology practice underpinning his specialist oncology work, with particular interest in gastrointestinal and cross-sectional imaging. Nearly two decades of consultant experience at Royal Surrey County Hospital provides extensive diagnostic depth across the range of abdominal and thoracic presentations.
