About Dr Mariathas

Dr Matthew Mariathas is a consultant musculoskeletal radiologist at Royal Surrey County Hospital, where he has worked since his appointment in 2012. He is the MRI Lead at the Trust and serves as a clinical and educational supervisor for radiology registrars within the Kent, Surrey and Sussex (KSS) deanery training scheme. He holds the Fellowship of the Royal College of Radiologists (FRCR) and is a recipient of the RSNA Education Exhibit Award.

He completed a dedicated post-CCT musculoskeletal radiology fellowship at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, Oxford, and John Radcliffe Hospital - one of the UK's foremost orthopaedic and MSK radiology training environments. This specialist fellowship underpins his diagnostic and interventional expertise across the full breadth of musculoskeletal imaging, from joint and soft tissue pathology to image-guided procedures.

In addition to his NHS work at Royal Surrey, he practises privately at Mount Alvernia Hospital, Nuffield Health Guildford, and The Imaging Clinic in Guildford. He has a particular interest in sports imaging and participated as a volunteer musculoskeletal radiologist at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, providing imaging support for elite international athletes.

His commitment to education and training is reflected in his RSNA award and his active supervisory roles, and he is widely regarded as one of the most experienced MSK radiologists serving the Surrey region.

Scans Dr Mariathas Reports

Dr Mariathas has hands-on clinical experience reporting all of the following scan types across a full range of musculoskeletal conditions.

MRI

Musculoskeletal MRI across all joints - knee, shoulder, hip, ankle, wrist, elbow and spine. The mainstay of MSK imaging, providing detailed assessment of ligaments, tendons, cartilage, bone marrow and soft tissue structures without radiation.

CT

CT of the musculoskeletal system including trauma, fracture assessment, joint CT arthrography and metabolic bone disease. Particularly useful for bony detail and complex fracture patterns where MRI alone is insufficient.

Ultrasound

MSK ultrasound for assessment of tendons, ligaments, muscles, bursae, peripheral nerves and soft tissue masses. Dynamic imaging capability enables real-time assessment of joint movement and tendon function, and is used to guide injections precisely.

X-Ray

Plain-film radiography of joints, bones and spine. Often the first imaging investigation in MSK medicine, used for fracture assessment, arthritis grading, bone tumour evaluation and post-operative implant review.

Image-Guided MSK Interventions

Ultrasound and fluoroscopy-guided interventional procedures including corticosteroid injections, hyaluronic acid injections, aspirations, barbotage for calcific tendinopathy, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and hydrodistension. Precise image guidance maximises accuracy and effectiveness.

Not sure which type of scan you have? We will identify it for you. Simply get in touch and we will confirm the modality and match your images to the right specialist before any report is produced.
