A UK Specialist Opinion, Without Travelling to the UK

More people than ever are having scans and treatment outside the UK. In 2024, residents of Great Britain made an estimated 523,000 visits abroad for medical treatment, according to the Office for National Statistics. Many more British people live overseas, or are injured or fall ill while travelling.

Wherever your scan was done, a radiology report depends on the images, not on where you are. Doctorum's consultant radiologists review your original images remotely and write a formal report in clear English - the same service, standards and subspecialist expertise as for patients in the UK.

Every report is written by a named UK consultant radiologist registered with the General Medical Council (GMC), and accountable under UK professional standards. You can share it with your doctors, your surgeon or your insurer, wherever they are.

Who We Help

International patients come to us in many different situations. These are the most common.

Injured or unwell abroad

Had an X-ray, CT or MRI while travelling? An independent UK report helps you understand the findings and plan the next steps with your doctors at home. Read our guide to getting a scan abroad.

UK expats living overseas

Living abroad but would like an opinion from a UK specialist, in English? We report scans performed in your country of residence, and can give a second opinion on a local report.

Scanned in the UK, now living abroad

The NHS is a residence-based system, so once you move abroad permanently you are no longer automatically entitled to NHS treatment. We can obtain your UK scan images for you and provide a formal report or second opinion. About our image retrieval service.

Planning surgery or treatment abroad

Before you commit, an independent UK review of your scans can confirm the findings your overseas treatment is based on. NHS guidance on treatment abroad recommends getting a second opinion before you go.

Back in the UK after treatment abroad

Returned home with scans from an overseas hospital? We can review them and provide a report in English to share with your GP or UK consultant.

Seeking a leading UK subspecialist

Wherever you live, you can access UK consultant radiologists who practise at leading NHS and private hospitals, matched to the part of the body your scan covers. Meet our radiologists.

Why Choose a UK-Registered Radiologist

Remote second opinions are offered by providers around the world. It is worth checking who will actually write and sign your report.

  • A named, accountable consultant. Every report carries the name and GMC registration number of the UK consultant radiologist who wrote it.
  • Subspecialist expertise. Your scan is matched to a consultant who specialises in that part of the body, such as neuroradiology or musculoskeletal imaging.
  • Clear English. A formal written report in a standard clinical format, plus answers to a reasonable number of follow-up questions by email.
  • A person, not AI. Your images are personally reviewed by a consultant radiologist. AI never replaces their judgement.
  • UK data protection. Your images and information are handled under UK GDPR. Doctorum is ICO registered, Cyber Essentials certified and Data Security and Protection Toolkit certified.
  • Regulated in England. Doctorum is registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC). No referral is needed to use our service.

What to Send Us

  • 2The original report, if you have one - in any language.
  • 3A short summary of your symptoms, why the scan was done and the question you would like answered.
  • 4Any earlier scans of the same area, if available, so changes over time can be compared.

Questions From International Patients

Common questions about using Doctorum from outside the UK.

Can you report a scan that was done outside the UK?

Yes. As long as we can receive the original images in a standard digital format (DICOM), our consultant radiologists can report scans from hospitals and clinics anywhere in the world.

Will my report be in English?

Yes. Every report is written in English by a UK consultant radiologist, in a standard clinical format you can share with your doctors, surgeon or insurer.

Is a report the same price as a second opinion?

Yes. A formal report on a scan that has not been reported, and a second opinion on a scan that already has a report, are the same fixed price: £200 for MRI, CT, Mammography and Nuclear Medicine including PET CT, and £95 for Ultrasound and X-Ray.

My original report is not in English. Is that a problem?

No. Our radiologists form their opinion from the images themselves. If you have the original report, please send it as it is - you do not need to have it translated.

How do I send my images from abroad?

We send you a secure upload link, so you can upload the images from a CD, USB stick or download link provided by the hospital. If you are not sure how to get your images, we will guide you.

Can you obtain my images for me?

Yes, in most cases. For a flat fee of £50 (no VAT), we obtain a copy of your scans and images from nearly every NHS hospital, most private facilities and some hospitals outside the UK. Tell us where your scan was done and we will confirm before we start.

How do I pay from abroad?

Prices are fixed and in pounds sterling, the same as for patients in the UK. Card payments are processed securely online, and we will confirm the details with you before you pay.

Will my overseas doctor accept the report?

Our reports are formal clinical reports, written by a named consultant radiologist with their GMC registration number, and suitable for sharing with any doctor. Decisions about your treatment remain with the doctors looking after you.

Is this an emergency service?

No. If you need urgent medical care, please contact local emergency services or go to the nearest hospital. Our service is for a formal report or second opinion on scans you already have.

Is my scan read by a person or by AI?

Your scan is personally reviewed and reported by a UK consultant radiologist who specialises in that type of imaging. AI never replaces your consultant's judgement.

How is my data protected?

Your images and information are handled under UK GDPR. Doctorum is registered with the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), is Cyber Essentials certified and holds Data Security and Protection Toolkit certification.
