What is a Private Brain MRI Report?

A private brain MRI report is a formal written interpretation of your brain or head MRI scan produced by a consultant neuroradiologist - a radiologist who subspecialises exclusively in imaging of the brain, spine, and nervous system. The report provides a systematic assessment of the brain parenchyma, white matter, cerebrovascular structures, ventricles, and posterior fossa, identifying any abnormalities and placing them in clinical context.

At Doctorum, brain MRI reports are produced by some of the most experienced neuroradiologists in the UK. Our neuroradiology team has collective experience spanning decades at leading neuroscience centres, including St George's University Hospitals, the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (NHNN), Great Ormond Street, and Charing Cross Hospital.

Reports are delivered within 24-48 hours by secure encrypted delivery. If you have received a brain MRI report you do not fully understand, or want a specialist expert to review your images independently, Doctorum can help.

Who Requests a Private Brain MRI Report?

Brain MRI is the most-requested scan in neurology. These are the most common reasons our patients come to Doctorum.

Waiting for an NHS Report

Your brain MRI has been performed but results are delayed through your NHS pathway. You need answers sooner.

Persistent or Unusual Headaches

Recurrent, worsening, or positional headaches that warrant specialist review of your brain MRI by an experienced neuroradiologist.

White Matter Changes

Your report mentions white matter changes, hyperintensities, or leukoaraiosis. A specialist second opinion can clarify their significance and most likely cause.

Second Opinion

An existing brain MRI report has identified a finding - or failed to explain your symptoms - and you want an independent specialist review.

Seizure or Epilepsy Workup

First seizure or known epilepsy where a formal neuroradiological assessment of the brain MRI is needed to identify any underlying structural cause.

Memory, MS, or TIA Concerns

Early dementia workup, suspected MS, or TIA review where a careful, expert neuroradiological assessment can make a significant difference to the next steps.

What Your Brain MRI Report Covers

A Doctorum brain MRI report provides a comprehensive, structured assessment of every key region and finding.

Cerebral Cortex and Grey Matter

Cortical signal and thickness, sulcal pattern, and any areas of cortical abnormality including infarction, encephalitis, or neoplastic involvement.

White Matter

Periventricular, deep, and subcortical white matter hyperintensities - classified by distribution and likely aetiology (vascular, demyelinating, or other).

Basal Ganglia and Thalami

Signal and morphology of the basal ganglia, thalami, and deep grey matter structures, with comment on any lacunar infarcts or signal change.

Cerebellum and Brainstem

Cerebellar signal and volume, brainstem morphology and signal, including the midbrain, pons, and medulla.

Ventricular System and CSF Spaces

Lateral, third, and fourth ventricle size and configuration, periventricular signal, and any features suggesting hydrocephalus or raised intracranial pressure.

Vascular Structures

Cerebrovascular assessment including any evidence of prior infarction (acute or chronic), haemorrhage, vascular malformations, or aneurysm where MRA sequences are included.

Posterior Fossa

Detailed assessment of the posterior fossa contents, Chiari malformation where relevant, and craniovertebral junction.

Pituitary Gland and Skull Base

Pituitary volume and signal (where included in the field of view), sellar and suprasellar region, skull base, and any incidental lesions.

Focal Lesions and Incidental Findings

Characterisation of any focal lesions identified - including arachnoid cysts, developmental variants, and incidental findings - with comment on likely significance and recommended follow-up.

Brain MRI Report FAQs

Common questions about our private brain MRI reporting service.

How long does a private brain MRI report take?

Reports are delivered within 24-48 hours of receiving your images. If you are concerned about an urgent finding or your symptoms are severe, please contact us directly and we will do our best to prioritise your case.

What does "white matter changes" mean on a brain MRI?

White matter changes (also described as white matter hyperintensities or leukoaraiosis) are areas that appear bright on T2 and FLAIR sequences. They can be caused by age-related small vessel disease, migraine, hypertension, demyelinating conditions like MS, or other causes. A Doctorum neuroradiologist will characterise their distribution, grade their severity, and explain the most likely cause in your report.

Who will report my brain MRI at Doctorum?

Your brain MRI will be reported by a UK GMC-registered consultant neuroradiologist with subspecialty expertise. Our neuroradiology team includes Dr Declan Johnson (consultant neuroradiologist at St George's since 1999 and recipient of the Cornelius G Dyke Memorial Award) and Dr Faraan Khan (European Diploma in Neuroradiology, fellowship at NHNN and Great Ormond Street).

Can I get a second opinion on my brain MRI report?

Yes. A second neuroradiology opinion on a brain MRI is one of the most valuable services Doctorum offers - particularly when a finding has been identified and its significance is unclear, or when your symptoms are unexplained by a normal report. You will receive an independent specialist review at the same fixed price of £200.

How do I send my brain MRI images to Doctorum?

We provide a secure encrypted upload link for your DICOM images. If you do not yet have your images on disc or electronically, we can guide you on how to request them from your NHS hospital or imaging centre. For guidance on requesting images from an NHS trust, see our patient guide on how to request NHS scan images.

* Includes a formal written report and one round of responses to a reasonable number of follow-up questions submitted by email. Prices are correct at the time of publication.
