What is a Private Knee MRI Report?
A private knee MRI report is a formal written interpretation of your knee MRI scan by a consultant radiologist who specialises in musculoskeletal imaging. The report systematically evaluates the ligaments, menisci, articular cartilage, bone, and surrounding soft tissues - identifying any tears, degenerative changes, or other pathology with clinical precision.
At Doctorum, knee MRI reports are produced by GMC-registered consultant MSK radiologists with subspecialty expertise in knee imaging - including sports injuries, degenerative joint disease, and post-surgical assessment. Our team includes radiologists who work at specialist orthopaedic and sports medicine centres, such as the Fortius Clinic and Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre.
Reports are delivered within 24-48 hours by secure encrypted delivery, written in clear language you can share directly with your orthopaedic surgeon, sports physician, or physiotherapist.
Who Requests a Private Knee MRI Report?
From sports injuries to degenerative conditions, these are the most common reasons patients come to Doctorum for a knee MRI report.
Sports Injury - Ligament Tear
Suspected ACL, PCL, or collateral ligament injury from sport or trauma. MRI is the definitive investigation before a decision about surgery or rehabilitation.
Meniscus Pain or Locking
Clicking, locking, or giving way of the knee - often indicating a meniscal tear that requires specialist assessment to guide management.
Second Opinion
You have an existing report but want an independent expert review - perhaps before agreeing to arthroscopy or other surgery.
Cartilage Damage
Persistent pain after injury or with activity, where X-ray is normal but cartilage damage is suspected. MRI is the preferred method for cartilage evaluation.
Waiting for NHS Report
Your knee MRI has been performed but you are waiting weeks for results to come back through your NHS pathway - and you need answers now.
Pre-surgical Assessment
A clear, up-to-date MSK radiology report to support surgical planning for ACL reconstruction, meniscal repair, or joint replacement.
What Your Knee MRI Report Covers
A Doctorum knee MRI report provides a comprehensive, structure-by-structure assessment of your knee joint.
ACL and PCL
Integrity of both cruciate ligaments, including partial and complete tears, with assessment of the tibial and femoral footprints.
Medial and Lateral Menisci
Full assessment of both menisci - including the body, anterior and posterior horns, root attachments, and any extrusion beyond the joint line.
Articular Cartilage
Graded assessment of cartilage on the medial and lateral femoral condyles, tibial plateau, and patella, including any focal defects or chondral flaps.
Collateral Ligaments
Medial and lateral collateral ligament integrity, including the posterolateral corner structures (fibular collateral ligament, popliteus complex).
Patellofemoral Joint
Patellar tracking, trochlear morphology, patella alta or baja, patellar tendon, and quadriceps tendon integrity.
Bone Marrow and Subchondral Bone
Bone marrow oedema (bone bruising), subchondral insufficiency fractures, stress reactions, and any focal bony lesions.
Baker's Cyst and Bursae
Assessment of the popliteal fossa, Baker's cyst size and character, prepatellar and infrapatellar bursae.
Joint Effusion
Presence and volume of joint fluid, including any haemarthrosis, and assessment for loose bodies within the joint.
Periarticular Soft Tissues
Iliotibial band, biceps femoris, pes anserinus, popliteus muscle and tendon, and any incidental soft tissue masses.

Common questions about our private knee MRI reporting service.
How long does a private knee MRI report take?
Reports are delivered within 24-48 hours of receiving your images. If you need a faster turnaround for clinical or sporting reasons, please let us know and we will do our best to accommodate you.
Can a knee MRI show a torn ACL?
Yes. MRI is the definitive investigation for ACL tears. It can confirm whether the tear is complete or partial, identify the location of the injury within the ligament, and assess any associated injuries to the menisci, bone, or other ligaments that commonly occur alongside ACL tears.
Can a knee MRI show cartilage damage?
Yes. MRI is the best non-invasive tool for evaluating articular cartilage. Your report will grade any cartilage thinning, softening, or full-thickness defects on the femoral condyles, tibial plateau, and patella, and note their extent and location.
Can I get a second opinion on my existing knee MRI report?
Absolutely. This is one of our most frequently requested services - particularly from patients who have been advised to have surgery and want an independent specialist view on the images before proceeding, or who have been told their scan is normal despite ongoing symptoms.
How do I send my knee MRI images to Doctorum?
We provide a secure encrypted upload link for your DICOM images. If you do not yet have your images, we can guide you on how to request them from your NHS hospital or private imaging centre. Most hospitals will provide images on request within a few working days.
* Includes a formal written report and one round of responses to a reasonable number of follow-up questions submitted by email. Prices are correct at the time of publication.
