What is a Private Shoulder MRI Report?
A private shoulder MRI report is a formal written interpretation of your shoulder MRI scan by a consultant radiologist who specialises in musculoskeletal imaging. It provides a systematic assessment of the rotator cuff tendons, glenoid labrum, articular cartilage, biceps tendon, acromioclavicular joint, and surrounding soft tissues - identifying tears, impingement, degeneration, and instability pathology.
Shoulder MRI is the investigation of choice for most soft tissue pathology around the shoulder joint. At Doctorum, every shoulder MRI report is produced by a GMC-registered consultant MSK radiologist with subspecialty expertise in shoulder and upper limb imaging. Our radiologists work at leading orthopaedic and sports medicine centres, including the Fortius Clinic and Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre.
Reports are returned within 24-48 hours via secure encrypted delivery, in clear language suitable for sharing with your orthopaedic surgeon, sports physician, or physiotherapist.
Who Requests a Private Shoulder MRI Report?
Shoulder pathology is one of the most common reasons for a musculoskeletal MRI. These are the situations we see most often.
Suspected Rotator Cuff Tear
Pain lifting the arm above shoulder height, weakness, or night pain. MRI is the definitive test for rotator cuff pathology before any surgical decision.
Impingement Syndrome
Shoulder pain with overhead activities that has not responded to conservative treatment. MRI can identify bursitis, tendon thickening, and subacromial crowding.
Second Opinion
You have an existing shoulder MRI report but want an independent expert review before agreeing to surgery or a significant change in management.
Instability or Dislocation History
Recurrent shoulder dislocation or subluxation, where labral and capsular pathology (Bankart lesion) needs to be assessed before stabilisation surgery.
Waiting for NHS Report
Your shoulder scan has been performed but results are delayed through your NHS pathway and your symptoms are affecting your work or daily life.
AC Joint or Biceps Pathology
Pain at the front of the shoulder or over the acromioclavicular joint, where biceps tendon rupture or AC joint arthropathy needs to be characterised.
What Your Shoulder MRI Report Covers
A Doctorum shoulder MRI report provides a thorough, structure-by-structure assessment of your shoulder joint and surrounding soft tissues.
Rotator Cuff Tendons
Supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor, and subscapularis - assessed for partial and full-thickness tears, tendinopathy, and muscle atrophy or fatty infiltration.
Subacromial Space and Bursa
Subacromial bursal thickening and fluid, subacromial-subdeltoid bursa, and assessment for impingement from the acromion or AC joint.
Glenoid Labrum
Anterior and posterior labrum, SLAP lesions (superior labrum), Bankart lesions, and any paralabral cysts indicating underlying labral tears.
Glenohumeral Joint and Cartilage
Articular cartilage on the humeral head and glenoid, joint effusion, loose bodies, and any changes indicating adhesive capsulitis (frozen shoulder).
Acromioclavicular Joint
AC joint degeneration, inferior osteophytes contributing to impingement, joint effusion, and any capsular pathology.
Biceps Long Head Tendon
Bicipital groove position and tendon integrity, including tenosynovitis, partial tears, and complete rupture with assessment of retraction.
Bone and Acromion
Humeral head, acromion morphology, distal clavicle, and any bony abnormality including Hill-Sachs or bony Bankart lesions.
Muscle and Periarticular Tissues
Rotator cuff muscle bulk, fatty infiltration, deltoid, and any surrounding soft tissue masses or fluid collections.
Joint Effusion
Glenohumeral joint fluid volume and character, including haemarthrosis and any features suggesting septic arthritis where clinically relevant.

Common questions about our private shoulder MRI reporting service.
Can a shoulder MRI show a rotator cuff tear?
Yes. MRI is the gold standard for diagnosing rotator cuff tears. It identifies which tendon is affected (supraspinatus is most common), whether the tear is partial or full thickness, the size and degree of tendon retraction, and the degree of fatty muscle atrophy - all key factors in deciding between conservative management and surgical repair.
What is a SLAP tear and can MRI diagnose it?
A SLAP (Superior Labrum Anterior to Posterior) tear is an injury to the top of the glenoid labrum where the biceps long head tendon attaches. Standard MRI can identify significant SLAP pathology, though MR arthrography (with contrast injected into the joint) offers the highest sensitivity for labral tears. Your Doctorum report will clearly describe any labral findings and their likely clinical significance.
Do I need a GP referral for a private shoulder MRI report?
No. You can request a private shoulder MRI report or second opinion directly from Doctorum without a GP or specialist referral.
Can I get a second opinion on my shoulder MRI before agreeing to surgery?
Yes, and this is one of the most sensible uses of our service. Before committing to rotator cuff surgery, shoulder stabilisation, or any significant shoulder procedure, an independent specialist review of the imaging can confirm whether the findings support the proposed intervention. The cost is £200 - considerably less than the cost of an unnecessary operation.
How do I send my shoulder MRI images to Doctorum?
We provide a secure encrypted upload link for your DICOM images. If you do not yet have your images, we will guide you on how to request them from your NHS trust or private imaging provider. Most hospitals will provide images within a few working days of a written request.
