Private Cervical Spine MRI Reports from UK Consultant Radiologists

What is a Private Cervical Spine MRI Report?
A private cervical spine MRI report is a formal written interpretation of your neck MRI scan, produced by a consultant radiologist with subspecialty expertise in spinal or musculoskeletal imaging. The report provides a systematic, level-by-level assessment of the cervical discs, spinal cord, nerve root exit foramina, facet joints, and surrounding soft tissues - identifying disc herniations, cord compression, radiculopathy, and degenerative changes with clinical precision.
At Doctorum, cervical spine MRI reports are produced by GMC-registered consultant radiologists with subspecialty expertise in either neuroradiology or musculoskeletal imaging - the two disciplines with the deepest spinal imaging training. Every member of our team has a minimum of 15 years of post-CCT consultant experience.
Reports are delivered within 24-48 hours by secure encrypted delivery, written clearly for sharing with your GP, neurologist, orthopaedic or spinal surgeon, or physiotherapist.
Who Requests a Private Cervical Spine MRI Report?
Neck pain with arm symptoms is one of the most common reasons patients seek a private radiology opinion. These are the situations we see most often.
Waiting for an NHS Report
Your cervical spine MRI has been performed but results are delayed through your NHS pathway and your symptoms are affecting your work or daily life.
Arm Pain or Radiculopathy
Pain, tingling, or numbness radiating from the neck into the arm, hand, or fingers - indicating nerve root compression that needs specialist assessment.
Second Opinion
You have an existing cervical spine MRI report and want an independent expert review - particularly before any decision about surgery or injection therapy.
Myelopathy Symptoms
Clumsy hands, difficulty with fine motor tasks, unsteady gait, or weakness suggesting spinal cord compression that warrants urgent specialist imaging review.
Whiplash with Ongoing Symptoms
Persistent neck pain and stiffness following a road traffic accident or injury, where structural disc or ligamentous pathology needs to be assessed and documented.
Pre-surgical Assessment
A detailed, up-to-date radiological assessment before cervical discectomy, anterior cervical fusion, or posterior decompression surgery.
What Your Cervical Spine Report Covers
A Doctorum cervical spine MRI report provides a level-by-level assessment from C2/3 through to C7/T1, with precise anatomical detail at each disc level.
Disc Levels C2/3 to C7/T1
Each intervertebral disc assessed for height loss, signal change, disc bulge, herniation (protrusion or extrusion), and any osteophyte formation.
Cervical Spinal Cord
Cord morphology, diameter, and signal - including any intrinsic signal change (myelomalacia) indicating established cord damage from chronic compression.
Foraminal Stenosis
Bilateral assessment of each neural foramen for narrowing from disc material, osteophytes, or uncovertebral joint hypertrophy - the most common cause of cervical radiculopathy.
Central Canal Stenosis
Spinal canal diameter and degree of cord compression at each level, including assessment for any dynamic instability or retrolisthesis.
Facet Joints
Bilateral facet joint assessment for arthropathy, joint space loss, osteophytes, and any contribution to foraminal or canal narrowing.
Vertebral Body Alignment
Assessment for cervical lordosis, straightening or reversal of curvature, retrolisthesis, and any vertebral fracture or destructive lesion.
Ligamentous Structures
Posterior longitudinal ligament, ligamentum flavum, and prevertebral soft tissues - with comment on ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament where present.
Vertebral Bone Marrow
Signal of the cervical vertebral bodies, with comment on any focal lesions, Modic end plate changes, or features suggestive of infection or neoplasia.
Craniovertebral Junction
Assessment of the craniocervical junction, odontoid peg, atlantoaxial joint, and any Chiari malformation or other relevant upper cervical finding where included in the field of view.

Common questions about our private cervical spine MRI reporting service.
What is cervical radiculopathy and can MRI show it?
Cervical radiculopathy is compression or irritation of a nerve root as it exits the cervical spine, typically causing pain, tingling, or weakness radiating into the arm, hand, or fingers. MRI is the investigation of choice for identifying the level and cause - most commonly a disc herniation at C5/6 or C6/7, or foraminal narrowing from osteophytes. Your Doctorum report will identify the affected level and describe the nature of the compression.
What is cervical myelopathy?
Cervical myelopathy is compression of the spinal cord in the neck, which can cause clumsy hands, unsteady gait, weakness in the arms or legs, and in severe cases, bladder or bowel dysfunction. MRI is the gold standard for diagnosing cord compression and identifying intrinsic cord signal change (myelomalacia), which indicates established cord damage and has important implications for surgical urgency and planning.
Do I need a GP referral for a private cervical spine MRI report?
No. You can request a private cervical spine MRI report or second opinion directly from Doctorum without going through your GP first.
Can I get a second opinion on my cervical spine MRI before agreeing to surgery?
Yes, and this is one of the most valuable uses of our service. Before committing to cervical discectomy, fusion, or posterior decompression, an independent specialist review of the imaging can confirm whether the radiological findings support the proposed surgery and whether the correct level is being targeted.
How do I send my cervical spine MRI images to Doctorum?
We provide a secure encrypted upload link for your DICOM images. If you do not yet have your images, we will guide you on how to request them from your NHS trust or private imaging provider. Most hospitals will provide images within a few working days of a written request.
* Includes a formal written report and one round of responses to a reasonable number of follow-up questions submitted by email. Prices are correct at the time of publication.
